What is a Rock Tumbler & How Does It Work?

  • A rock tumbler is a lapidary machine designed to smooth and polish rocks, mimic the natural weathering process of rivers and ocean waves—only accelerated from thousands of years down to just a few weeks.

Step-by-Step: The 4-Stage Rock Tumbling Process

Achieving a high-shine finish requires patience and proper multi-stage processing. To prevent finger damage, A belt and pully cover is suggested. Adult supervision around any machine is for safety. 

Stage 1: Coarse Grinding (Coarse Grit)

Purpose: Removes sharp edges, deep pits, and shapes the rough rocks into rounded stones.

Stage 2: Medium Smoothing (Medium Grit)

Purpose: Smoothes out scratches left behind by the coarse grit.

Stage 3: Pre-Polish (Fine Grit)

Purpose: Prepares the surface for maximum clarity and shine, giving the stone a soft satin finish.

Stage 4: Final Polish (Aluminum Oxide/Cerium Oxide)

Purpose: Brings out the ultra-glossy, liquid-like mirror shine on your finished gemstones.

How long does it take to tumble rocks?

A complete rock tumbling cycle generally takes 3 to 4 weeks, with each of the four stages lasting approximately 7 days.

You can tumble almost any hard rock or mineral! Rocks with a Mohs hardness of 6 to 8 work best, such as Agates, Jaspers, Quartz, Amethyst, Tiger’s Eye, and Obsidian.
